Building a Character for Devising Processes: Techniques in Co-constructing a Vibrant Life

How can we teach and assist students in building and developing well rounded and believable characters in their devising and playmaking processes? In this paper, Dr Prudence Wales will discuss a classroom project in which students collaboratively co-constructed a character, her interrelationships with people in her world and her lived experiences using drama and theatre education techniques and social media. The objective of the class, conducted with pre-service teachers, was to create a character and her fictional world that would become the starting point of a ‘rolling’ process drama between school students in Singapore and Australia. She will describe and demonstrate how improvisation and social media (Facebook, WhatsApp) were used as part of the character building processes and consider them against Stanislavski’s method. Finally, she will highlight how Rolling Role can be applied in developing characters for writing or playbuilding at upper primary and secondary levels.

Biography

Dr Prudence Wales has been a drama educator and applied theatre practitioner for over thirty years. Nine of those years were spent educating pre-service and graduate teachers and teaching artists in Singapore. An active member of SDEA, Prue is a member of the SDEA International Theatre Arts Conference Planning Committee. Prue recently moved to Hong Kong where she is currently the Assistant Deputy Director (Research and Interdisciplinary Studies) at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
