Educational Drama in Primary English

Ms Elvira Holmberg & Mr Shahdon Jamil

Context of Discussion: Primary School (Ages 7 to 12)

Teaching artist Elvira Holmberg and MOE educator Shahdon Jamil will demonstrate the possibility of drama as a powerful cross curriculum learning tool. The drama activities and strategies employed in this workshop will be useful as pre-writing activities to support the new English writing assessment format. This participatory workshop also explores the advantages and challenges of using drama as pedagogy in an English class in a Primary School classroom.

Topic of Interest: #education #pedagogy  #primaryschool

Shahdon Jamil is interested in bringing the joy of learning through play and drama in the classroom. As an English and Science teacher in Tampines Primary School, he finds time and space for children to use drama to think, explore and create freely. He has recently started a school-wide programme, ‘What If?’ in Tampines Primary School to provide opportunities for children to explore social issues within a non-threatening and safe space of forum theatre.

Elvira Holmberg is President of SDEA and a teaching artist at School of the Arts. As a drama educator, Elvira trains students and teachers in drama and develops curriculum. She returned to Singapore in 2009 after teaching drama at various levels in international and local schools in Holland. As an artist, she devises and directs original work for theatre.
